Dreamers vs Realists [MF]

Hey, do you watch Modern Family? One of a popular America’s TV series. The topic is always about family. It’s been a long time I didn’t watch this drama, well distracted by The Mentalist and *whispering* some Korean dramas :P. Then I started to watch one episode yesterday, and it kinda inspired me. Well, actually this drama is always great, it represents a real family nowadays and all those issues.

Luke and Phil listen to Kenneth’s story of success

Punkin Chuckin, is the title of the 9th episode in season 3. It starts with Kenneth, a former neighbour who came to visit the Dunphys. He became a successful business man, and said that Phil is the one who always inspired him. Then Luke ask to his dad, “So Kenneth became a gajillionaire by asking himself, `what would Phil do?`. But you’re you. Why aren’t we gajillionaires? Why don’t you do what Phil would do?”. Short story, Phil thought that it’s Claire is always been a burden so that he couldn’t follow his ideas and became succesful like Kenneth. As a Pritchett, she is too practical and by nature, a “dream killer”. She’s shot down gems like adult tricycles and the helmet head scratcher (TM).

Manny with his (ugly) centerpiece for thanksgiving

Another “dream killer” is about Manny’s “Centerpiece for Thanksgiving”. He made such an artwork to be shown to the whole family’s dinner. Jay thought it’s ugly, while Gloria always praises him no matter what. Jay couldn’t help himself not to talk the truth to Manny, especially when his step son said the truth about Jay’s legendary rice pilaf which is a little bit plain. So he told Manny the truth by the time they arrived at The Dunphy’s house for dinner.

The final “dream killer”, Mitchell, upsets Cam when he tells him he didn’t believe in his punkin’ chunkin’ story. In the story, Cam said he and his farm friends launched a pumpkin across a football field and into the open sunroof of a preacher’s car. Mitch isn’t buying it. Claire and Jay don’t either. So instead of eating dinner the whole family heads down to the football field to see who is right, the realists or the dreamers. Obviously, it’s the realists and the pumpkin doesn’t go more than a couple yards.

The family tries to slingshot the pumpkin together

The dream killer family decides being right isn’t that fun when the ones you love are wrong. And then they tried it one more time, slingshot another pumpkin, with more people pulling. Voila! It worked! Everyone’s happy. 🙂

At the end of the story, a beautiful speech of Cameron….

There are dreamers, and there are realists in this world. You’d think the dreamers would find the dreamers and the realist would find the realist, but more often than not, the opposite is true. You see, the dreamers need the realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun. And the realists… Well, without the dreamers, they might not ever get off the ground.

It’s great isn’t it? And it’s literally true. Even I think it also happening in my own family. We have dreamers and realists at once, but thankfully we can make it works till now. God doesn’t create differences without any thought. Have a nice day! 🙂
